Microdermabrasion

What is It?

Microdermabrasion is a specialized exfoliating treatment designed to leave the skin looking polished and smooth, making imperfections, such as discoloration and fine lines, less noticeable.  Layers of dead tissue disappear as finely ground crystals are blown gently across the face.  This is an absolutely addition to the anti-aging range of products currently available to both women and men.

 Benefits

The benefits of microdermabrasion compared to other modalities are substantial and are reflected in the cost to the client and elimination of possible side effects.  The benefits include:

  • Minimal discomfort, no side effects

  • No anesthesia or recovery time required

  • Reduction of fine lines from early aging

  • Stimulation of collagen reproduction

  • Scar revision

  • Hyperpigmentation reduction

  • Overall rejuvenation of skin health

  • Enhanced penetration of topical actives

  • May be performed during pregnancy

  • May help to speed healing after surgery

  • No peeling or flaking after treatment

The appearance of your skin matters because it is the most physical way in which we present ourselves to the outside world.  Microdermabrasion works because it:

  • Gives immediate results

  • Has minimal risk of hyper pigmentation

  • Is equally effective for all skin types

History

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive modality for treating superficial blemishes resulting from trauma, aging, or prolonged sun exposure.  Microdermabrasion became FDA approved and available in the United States in early 1998 for use by both physicians and licensed aestheticians.  In Europe, where the technology originated, microdermabrasion has been used for over 13 years to successfully treat acne, fine lines and wrinkles, unwanted pigmentation, and other superficial skin damage.

Application

Simplicity makes microdermabrasion both safe and economical.  Used as an alternative or adjunct to laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels, it can be administered by a physician or by trained staff in 15 to 30 minutes.  There’s no anesthesia, no downtime, and you can return to your daily activities immediately.  Depending on skin type and condition, optimal results are achieved in five to eight treatments.

Microdermabrasion works effectively on all types of skin and can be administered as often as needed without fear of side effects.  It should not be used on skin with malignant tumors, certain keratoses, or certain other skin conditions.  Your aesthetician will evaluate your skin and advise you if these conditions are present.  Treatments are not intended to substitute for professional medical treatment.  For any serious skin disorder, consult a physician.
